Tech Tips and Tricks: Introducing the PICO Search and Browse eResources by Letter

Posted by Liz Kavanaugh on 10/31/2022

Double, double, toil and… tech trouble?  Not with these new tools on the library’s homepage!

You may have noticed that two new tools have popped into the library’s search features for a spell.

How can the PICO Search and Browse by Letter help your search strategy?

PICO Search: Standing for Population – Intervention – Comparison – Outcome, the PICO Search option sits alongside the Basic Search feature.  Both searches will scale the library’s entirety of digital collections; however, PICO will guide your evidence-based search specifically to focus on its namesake areas.  Enter your search terms based on the following sections, or leave the placeholders blank if preferred (or unknown) within your search, as your search is guided by these questions:

P: Patient, Population, Problem – How would I describe the problem, the patient, or a group of patients similar to mine?

I: Intervention or Issue – What main intervention, prognostic factor, or exposure am I considering?

C: Comparison Intervention or Issue – Is there an alternative to compare with the intervention?

O: Outcome – What do I hope to accomplish, measure, improve, or change?

Let the search do the rest for you!  The Search Settings, Bookmarks, and My Searches links are still available in the PICO Search tabs. Look below the extra options to Show Full Text Available Only, and Show Peer Reviewed Only on your results page.

Browse by Letter:  Scroll down the Library eResources section to the new Browse by Letter option.  Not sure of your resource’s exact spelling?  Use Browse by Letter to view all of the library’s electronic content – Journals, eBooks, and Databases. You can view alphabetically, or see all 11,001 items at once!

Please email hsl@geisinger.edu for more information or questions about the new features.
