Who We Serve
All Geisinger and Geisinger affiliate employees as well as affiliated nursing and medical students are considered patrons of the Health Sciences Library and are granted general access to the library space.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Looking for a book or journal article you can't access? Library staff can help! There are no limits on the number of articles you can request; however, due to copyright and fair use, you may only request two articles from one issue of the same journal if we do not subscribe to it. Please be mindful of staffed hours and weekend hours, especially when making RUSH requests.
Geisinger employees may make an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request in many ways:
Reference & Consultation
-
Reference Services
- Library staff is available during staffed hours to answer any reference questions you may have. We answer questions via email, phone, in-person, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams.
-
Literature Searching
- Library staff can provide in-depth search and bibliography support. Geisinger employees may make a literature search request in many ways:
-
Citation & Copyright Help
- Library staff can provide information about citation styles. We can also help you learn to use our citation management tool, RefWorks, to manage your citations.
-
We can advise you on the copyright status of materials and best practices for use of copyrighted material.
Orientations, Training & Tutorials
- Library staff can provide individual or small group training sessions for Geisinger employees. Topics include but are not limited to: searching for information using library resources, functionality of our health sciences databases, evidence-based medicine or point of care resources, and citation management software. The library subscribes to a number of tools that can enhance any group project or course, including our LibGuides software.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How can I request a copy of an article?
- Fill out our Interlibrary Loan form. Once your request is received, the library will request a copy from other libraries that have access to the article. Normally, the library will receive the article within 24 hours of ordering it; however, it can take 2-3 business days. If you need an article for immediate patient care indicate that on your request. If you need an article for a homework assignment, you must request the article from your school's library.
- How can I request a purchase for a journal, book, database, etc.?
- All purchase requests should go through the Library Director, Patricia Ulmer. Email details of your purchase request to paulmer@geisinger.edu.
- Does the library license a citation/reference manager?
- Yes, the library currently licenses RefWorks. If you need more information on how to sign-up for an account and get it set-up, see our RefWorks Guide.
- If I have a citation, how do I check if the library has full-text?
- Enter the citation information into the Citation Matcher.
- How do I access library resources off-campus?
- To access library resources off-campus, you will login with EZProxy. See our Remote Access Guide for more information on this.
- Still didn't answer your question? Ask the Library
